Helping, Not Hurting: Perspectives on Eating and Food-related Behaviors in Children and Adolescents

Hear a point-counterpoint discussion of different perspectives on improving lifestyle behaviors of children and adolescents who are at-risk of overweight or oerweight. The role of family involvement, access to healthy food choices, physical activity and sedentary activities, the environment, goal setting, and coping skills will be part of the discussion. An indepth discussion of the appropriateness of including calorie/food restriction in changing lifestyle behaviors in children and adolescents will be included. The discussion will be framed within the Social Ecological Model and guided by a moderator.

The Organics Debate: Is Premium Worth It?

With an annual sales growth of 20% for organic products, the need for nutrition educators to understand the science of organic agriculture has never been greater. This session will provide a background on organic agriculture/USDA certified organic farming; discuss production, labeling issues and the economic challenges of the producer and consumer. It will address the most commonly asked questions about organic dairy foods, and compare the safety, nutrition, and health of conventional vs. organically produced dairy foods.

Smart Heart: Cardiac Trends and Nutrition Advice for Diverse Groups

This session will evaluate best practices, assess current cardiovascular nutrition therapies and decipher the latest nutrition approaches to consider when counseling different genders and cultural populations. Nutrition education professionals will walk away from this session with more “heart smarts,” as well as tools and practical advice that can be immediately implemented with clients and family members interested in leading a heart-healthy lifestyle.
